Digital Project Life Layouts: August 2014

Project Life is my preferred method of scrapbooking and I’m hoping to provide you with some useful tips for either documenting your own lives or putting together your own pages with minimal fuss.

Here’s what I’m going to emphasize with the layouts I share:

  1. The random stuff I like to capture and document for myself.
  2. The simple approach to Project Life that I take. There are a lot of photos and very little embellishment and journaling.
  3. The way I organize some spreads into themes or stories.

You can click on each image below for a slightly larger view.

Digital Project Life Layouts: August 2014

Capture Idea: Assorted beverages: milkshake from Portillo’s, iced coffee from Lee’s sandwiches, bottle Coca-Cola from a vending machine.

Simplicity Point: Match the color scheme of the filler cards within the same spread.

Digital Project Life Layouts: August 2014

Capture Idea: If you’re going to a party or shower, try to get a couple shots of the decorations.

Capture Idea: Podcasts that you’ve been listening to.

August only had two spreads in it because I didn’t take many photos.

Ultimate Simplicity Point: Seriously, just go with what you’ve got.

Shop Update: Abstract Art for Commercial Use

If you’ve followed me on Instagram, you might have seen my daily abstract art project. I post a colorful abstract paint splattery art piece on Instagram (nearly) every day.

There’s tons of uses for these digital art pieces. I’ve converted them into products for my Society6 shop, used them in backgrounds for my word and name art prints, and used them as digital papers in art journaling.

But what could you use them for? How can you use a brightly colored and abstract pattern digital paper in your own products or scrapbooks? I’d love to see how you get creative with my designs. So I’m releasing these patterns out into the wild to see what awesome stuff you come up with.

Are you a digital scrapbooker? Do you create digital scrapbooking products? Are you an art journaler? Are you a stationery designer?

The designs I have available at my CreativeMarket shop are below (and you can click to get to that specific product page).

Photo Series: A Year of Cups

Photo Series: Cups - www.randomolive.com

Last year, I came across an Instagram challenge that a few ladies had started called, “a year of cups”. I thought it was a great way to capture the everyday. Who doesn’t drink (or eat) something out of a cup each day? It was a fun way to amass a collection of similarly styled (but still totally different) photos together in a series. I’ve fallen off the cup-photo-taking wagon, but I’d love to get started taking these types of photos again. What about you?

Random Love Letter Challenge

RandomLoveLetter challenge - www.randomolive.com

Do you guys follow me on Instagram? (you totally should) Have you noticed my love of library books? I also have this thing with leaving a random post-it inside the library books wishing the next reader well. Want to start this fun activity for yourself?

In June, Sarah (from Love Letter to Adventure) and I are teaming up to level-up this project and get all of you involved!

It’s the #RandomLoveLetter challenge and your mission is to leave a small positive note in any random location every day all month (you could even leave multiples per day!). Then take a picture of your note and share it on Instagram or Twitter with the hashtag #RandomLoveLetter.

Let’s get detailed (SMART-style):

  • Specifics: Write a short note and leave it in a random place (library books, restaurant menus, store aisles, etc) each day.
  • Measurements: We’re aiming for a total of one millions random love letters out in the wild this month! Tell all your friends to get involved!
  • Attainability: This activity should only take you 60 seconds. Jot down a quick note and leave it someplace you’re already passing by. Heck, if you had time, you could write a bunch of notes ahead of time and carry them with you throughout the month.
  • Relevance: Your note will most certainly brighten someone’s day! Who wouldn’t appreciate a lovely well wish?
  • Timeline: June 1 to June 30, 2015

In July, we’ll highlight a few of our fave #RandomLoveLetter photos on our blogs. Don’t be afraid to get creative!

What’s next?

  • Grab this graphic and share it on social media to let your friends know you’re participating.

  • Download this cheatsheet for ideas on supplies, phrases, and random drop locations (But remember you can totally deviate and get creative).
  • Gather your supplies and get posting on June 1!

And don’t forget to check out Sarah’s blog, Instagram, and her new Venture Planner.

Capture Idea: eBooks from the library get a screenshot.

Simplicity Point: Journaling was a simple bulleted list.

Capture Idea: I repotted some succulent plants, so I snapped a picture of the process. #succulentsunday is a real thing.

Digital Project Life Layouts and Tips - www.randomolive.com

Simplicity Point: Photos were labeled with a piece of digital washi and some type over it.

Capture Idea: I haven’t purchased a physical CD in a long time, so it was kind of a milestone that I did.

Capture Idea: My mixer needed servicing and there was a big sign letting me know I was in the right place.

Capture Idea: I like to photograph the fortunes from my fortune cookies because it lets me incorporate them into my digital scrapbook.

Digital Project Life Layouts and Tips - www.randomolive.com

Simplicity Point: Mostly squares since I’m always instagramming my pictures.

Capture Idea: I read a lot of books this month.

Simplicity Point: On both the left and right side of the spread, one of the patterned paper repeats. This is to help keep the layout balanced looking.

Shop Update: Be Your Self Prints

I am a huge fan of being yourself. I think that all of us have unique traits that make is completely awesome. And you probably have words that you use to describe yourselves and think are totally awesome. Sometimes, a visual reminder in our daily spaces help remind is that we should fully embrace those traits and be our authentic selves.

I’ve got a bunch of bright and colorful prints in my Etsy shop that you can buy as an instantly downloadable file. Print off as many copies as you’d like for yourselves or as gifts. And you can incorporate these sentiments in your art journals, scrapbooks, and more.

I’ve put a few examples below (and you can click on the images to get to that specific product page) but there are many more sayings in my shop. If you have a suggestion for a saying you’d like to see, leave it in the comments below and I’ll design a version and add it to the shop!

Limit Yourself to Three Important Tasks + Freebie

To Do List Tips - www.randomolive.com

We’ve all experienced to-do list overwhelm. I love making lists so making long to-do lists feels pretty natural. Listpads you see for sale at the stores are always so big! They must want you to finish everything, right?

The problem with long to-do lists is that it’s rare that you’d actually finish all the tasks on them. And then you end up feeling terrible and unproductive because you’ve barely made a dent on your task list.

But! If you limit yourself to just writing down three major things you need to do, and then do them, you’ll end up feeling really accomplished and productive. And feeling accomplished usually spurs more productivity. And if you want to call it quits for the day, you know that you did everything that you needed to for that day.

Want some other resources that explain the process?

To help keep myself on track, I created a one-page week-at-glance to-do list to narrow my focus for each day. I have a column for a focus area or theme for each day of the week, and then I write down those three most important tasks for that day. And when I get to cross off those three things, I feel great!

I’m sharing this downloadable with all of you to help you manage your tasks too.
