Top Five Reads of December 2025 – Historical Romance and Contemporary Romance Books

Hat Trick by Chelsea Curto (2025)

Contemporary romance. Book 4 of the DC Stars series. Starting with a total downer here when hockey player Riley gets injured in a car accident and loses his right leg. We get a story of his progression through grief and rehabilitation, with athletic trainer Lexi by his side. Of course, he’s always had a crush on Lexi and she’s a total commitment-phobe, but let’s be real here, they will most definitely fall in love. I loved the slow burn process of building their trust and friendship and then the slow dance into a physical relationship. I like how they team up together to work on Riley’s physical training and how supportive Lexi is. Plus, Riley has his own ways of impressing Lexi.

A Most Worthy Husband by Faye Delacour (2025)

Historical romance. Regency-era England. Book 3 of the Lucky Ladies of London series. Hannah is fed up with her mother’s matchmaking, so she seizes an opportunity to ruin herself by paying a man to kiss her where they can be seen. Silas is all sorts of hesitant, but eventually agrees for the money. It’s a whirlwind of scandal that turns into a fake courtship and a fake engagement. But Silas really is a stand-up guy, even if a bit misunderstood, and totally deserving of love an affection. Hannah is a bit naive in regards to scheming to get her parents back together, but aside from that, she does have genuine affection for Silas. Definitely a case of he falls first and harder though, which I adore.

Sparks Fly by Zakiya N. Jamal (2025)

Contemporary romance. Standalone novel. Stella is ready to lose her virginity at a sex club and luckily meets an awesome guy there, Max. But things don’t go as planned and they end up with unfinished business before parting ways. Stella’s in for a rude surprise when Max ends up being the brother of her boss’s boss and at her workplace to launch a new AI writing tool for their company. This would seem like the perfect set up for an enemies-to-lovers situation, but they have very wisely kept their work separate from their personal lives and continue with a semi-secret relationship. This book is all sorts of spicy and the workplace conflict doesn’t affect the romance plot much at all. Loved seeing how Max treats Stella and how they very easily and quickly fall in love.

Winds of the Storm by Beverly Jenkins (2006)

Historical romance. Reconstruction-era America. Book 2 of the Le Veq Family series. Archer and Zahra meet during the war when she rescues him from capture and saves his life. They cross paths again after the war when Zahra poses as a brothel madam to gather intelligence. He doesn’t recognize her, but certainly plans to seduce her. We get a simmering seduction here alongside the espionage associated with Zahra’s mission. Steamy and dangerous.

Heated Rivalry by Rachel Reid (2019)

Contemporary romance. Book 2 of the Game Changers series. The hype is real. Everything anyone says about this book being amazing is true. Did it take a TV adaptation and all the hype to get me to read it? Yes. Have I even seen the show yet? No. But this book was so good. How the heck does a secret romance spanning 8 years over the course of the book hook you in? I don’t know, but it’s amazing. We start with Shane and Ilya being total sports enemies, sports prodigies, totally famous rookies, but also terrified of being attracted to each other. There’s hockey and then there are all the secret hookups, that start off as an angry way to get it out of their systems, but keep happening. For years. And the pining when they aren’t together is insane. Loved this book. It will change your life.

Monthly Income Report: December 2025

Here’s the December 2025 breakdown of all the pennies I’ve collected from the internet. I’ve organized the income sources into bigger categories and then provided details from each source.

Affiliate Commissions: $1742.22

TikTok Shop Affiliate: $568.93

I have been creating TikTok Shop Affiliate videos since Sept 2024 and seeing steady sales. The process involves quick reviews or demonstrations of products that are sold within TikTok shop and linking them within the TikTok video. Results vary wildly depending on the product, the day, the month, the season, and the algorithm. (link to my TikTok account)

I’ve provided a screenshot of my top selling products on TikTok Shop this month below.

Etsy Affiliate: $793.39

The primary place where I promote Etsy affiliate links is through Pinterest. I’ve had a Pinterest account since forever, so my account is already full of craft tutorial links. I post my affiliate links to crochet and quilt patterns, and these have generated the most sales for me. (link to my Pinterest account)

Amazon Affiliate: $365.95

I’ve been an Amazon affiliate since the early days of my blog and have always recommended various supplies for art and lettering. However, the bulk of my income now comes from on-site commissions, where product review videos get added directly to the product page by Amazon. If someone watches the video on the product page and makes a purchase, then I get the affiliate commission. Light start here, since I got approved for this sub-program late in the month. (link to my Amazon Storefront)

Benable: $3.95

Benable a website that has its own audience and search functionality where you can link to various products and websites in collections. The affiliate income is baked into the platform when someone clicks on your featured product and makes a purchase. Probably the lowest friction income source since you don’t need an existing audience. (link to sign up for Benable)

Other Affiliate Programs: $10

This month, I joined a couple of new-to-me affiliate networks. In the process of generating links on ShopMy, I ended up on an upgraded tier level and the platform provided a $10 bonus. There were not technically any affiliate sales here. However, this platform is promising because I get to generate affiliate links with a chrome plug-in for lots of different shops. (link to join ShopMy)

Products: $125.53

Paper Goods Etsy Shop: $11.20

I sell bookmarks here mostly, with the occasional digital download. (link to Etsy shop)

Fiber Goods Etsy Shop: $35.26

Once upon a time, I thought I was going to make scarves and blankets while my baby napped and I could sell them online. And that kind of worked, but not profitably. Listings expired, and then I switched to smaller objects like coasters and cozies, and now I’m mostly selling digital crochet patterns. (link to Etsy shop)

Used Books: $78.60

I list used books for sale using the PangoBooks app. Sales are sporadic. This was a really good month. (link to my PangoBooks shop)

Digital Downloads: $0

Too many shops, not enough marketing. (link to crochet pattern shop, link to printables shop)

Print on Demand: $0.47

Once upon a time, I uploaded a ton of designs onto RedBubble. I do not nurture this revenue stream at all right now, and any sales are just a bonus surprise. (link to Redbubble shop)

Content Monetization: $11.74

Google AdSense: $9.79

Clearly, this is not a very lucrative income source, since the minimum payout to transfer to a bank account is $100. However, coins are coins, so I’m leaving the ads turned on at my blog. Is it enough to off-set the cost of the website hosting and domain registration? Probably not. But it hosts content that hopefully leads to other affiliate sales. (link to blog)

Instagram Bonus for Posts: $1.95

I have no idea how this was activated or why. I was previously enrolled in an Instagram Reels bonus program, but that has since been discontinued. At the time of this income report, I wasn’t paying much attention to creating content here, maybe posting one or two book reviews per day, which usually received less than 200 views and maybe earned $0.02 per post. (link to my Instagram)

Recurring Expenses

No income report is complete without factoring in expenses. I tend to pay annual subscriptions rates for things, so this will just be a recurring list of resources that I use.

Flodesk for email marketing $209/year (affiliate link for Flodesk)

USPS PO Box $210/year

Canva Pro $120/year

Bluehost for blog hosting and domain registration $350/year (check out the blog here)

Grayson Family Historical Romance Book Series by Beverly Jenkins

Vivid by Beverly Jenkins (1995)

Historical romance. Post-Civil War Michigan. Book 1 of the Grayson Family series. A female doctor in this era is a tough sell, but Dr. Viveca Lancaster (Vivid to her family) is ready to prove herself in a small town in Michigan. It doesn’t help that the town sorta-mayor Nate is skeptical of her wanting to stick around. He’s got his own hang-ups after his city-bred wife divorced him. But Viveca fits right in and definitely shows her competence to all the townsfolk. Of course the angry bickering between Nate and Viveca turns into flirting and so much more. Not much in the way of external plot for most of the book, but once we have our sights on a villain, Ms. Bev makes sure they get their comeuppance.

Jewel by Beverly Jenkins (2008)

Historical romance. 1880s Michigan. Book 2 of the Grayson Family series. Eli just needed a pretend wife for one dinner with a big city newspaperman to earn an investment, but ended up with a real wife instead when gossip gets out. Jewel is the only daughter of the gruff and surly lumbarjack and used to caring for her many older brothers. She never expected to marry, and especially not to Eli, the man she’d had a teenage crush on. She tries to make sure this is a marriage in name only, but he’s trying to convince her to make a real go of the relationship. It’s a lot of flirting and seducing on Eli’s part to get Jewel to comply. The romance is here is fairly predictable, but it was nice catching up with this town again and seeing everyone work together to built Jewel and Eli’s new house. Danger comes back into town in the form of cousin Nate’s ex-wife and we get to see all the chaos she brings with her.

Weekly Reads: December 22 to 28, 2025 (hockey romance, historical mean girls, and reconstruction era historical romance)

Power Play by Chelsea Curto (2024)

Contemporary romance. Book 2 of the DC Stars series. Piper needs some sex lessons after a divorce to a total jerk leaves her feeling totally unconfident in the bedroom. And the perfect tutor is the team goalie Liam, who is usually super stoic, but really has had a crush on Piper this whole time. But it’s only lessons. Followed by fake dating for his sister’s wedding. And then maybe an accidental drunken marriage in Vegas. Super steamy, loads of feelings, and the best friend group imaginable for all parties. If you’re looking for a feel good romance (in all the best ways), check this one out.

Like in Love with You by Emma R. Alban (2026)

Historical romance. Regency-era England. Standalone novel. Kinda like Mean Girls, but make it regency, and the rival ladies fall in love. Lady Rosalie has her life and her friends’ lives all planned out and is not pleased when newcomer Catherine is garnering all the attention from the gentlemen. There’s also some bad blood between their mothers and a bit of tug-o-war over a suitor ensues. Except Rosalie and Catherine have eyes for each other, and not all that interested in Mr. Boring. We get lots of fun friend group outings, a very supportive brother for Rosalie, and a meddling aunt. Super fun read.

Slap Shot by Chelsea Curto (2025)

Contemporary romance. Book 3 of the DC Stars series. Hudson is very clearly a relationship kind of a guy and totally squicked out by the wannabe stalkers posing as personal chefs. And when Madeline needs a chef job and happens to have a connection in DC, she’s set up with a job for Hudson. We get the sweetest slow burn friendship and romance here as Madeline and her daughter Lucy set up shop in Hudson’s home, cooking him meals and paying more attention to his health and nutrition than his underwear drawer. It really helps that Madeline does not follow hockey and is not starstruck by the guy. Hudson of course is the best of the best and takes things super slow with Madeline, mostly because he doesn’t want to upset the friendship, and also probably because he’s her employer, and then a smidge because she’s clearly skittish about guys. Loved this low-angst romance.
