Contemporary romance. Book 2 of the Next series. Lane and Matt are in the same social circle because their friends Chloe and Warren got together in the first book of the series. They meet, they flirt, they share a New Years kiss, but do not hook up. Fast forward a year and a half and they’re both thoroughly stuck in the friend zone. Lane has all sorts of social anxiety and insecurity with an unwillingness to commit to any relationship, so it’s probably for the best that she and Matt never hooked up because it would make their friend group very awkward. Except that she’s totally attracted to him and can’t help thinking lustful thoughts. Matt is basically the nicest guy ever, even though he isn’t particularly knowledgeable about current pop culture references due to his remote homeschooled upbringing. When Lane spontaneously buys a school bus that needs fixing up to turn into some sort of livable tiny home on wheels, she enlists Matt’s help to go pick up the bus and drive it home and to help her fix it up. And of course Matt is awesome and helps Lane every step of the way. They soon heat things up with a friends with benefits situation, even though Lane is very clear that she’s not looking for a relationship. Matt’s just happy to take what he can get, but we all know that he’s patiently waiting for more. We get an emotional rollercoaster in this book as Lane deals with her past traumas and her relationship with her mom and sister. But the payoff here is well worth it.
