Before and After: RandomOlive Header Design

Before and After: RandomOlive.com

I hope you’ve noticed that I’ve freshened up the site design with a new mobile-responsive theme and a new header design and site tagline.

Why the change?

When I started the blog last summer, I wanted to stick with a font-based design as a start. I picked Intro as my bold slab serif font and Bellota as a script font. I combined them together as a starter logo for my site. I still plan to use these fonts throughout my site and as headers on photos throughout the blog. I created the tagline “the random brightness of everyday life” mostly because I didn’t know exactly what the blog was going to be about. The only plan I had was that my posts would start off random as my interests flowed, and I’d figure it out as I gained more experience.

What’s different now?

My brush lettering has improved tons since last summer, so I felt a lot more confident using my own hand-drawn design as my header. I changed the tagline to “injecting brightness, color, and fun into your everyday”. It’s similar to the old tagline with the idea of incorporating brightness into your everyday, but this time, I started with the word “injecting”. This is important! I want to take an active role, and by using this verb in my tagline, I’m showing you that I’m doing my job to help you (the reader).

What’s the same?

The color scheme throughout the blog is the same. Navy, coral, teal. If you knew me in real life, you’d know these are my wardrobe staples. So of course, they’d be my website colors!

I hope you enjoyed reading about the thought process behind my design changes! Have you changed anything up on your sites lately?

Ultimate DIY Bundle is Back

I’m a big fan of learning new stuff and I’m usually buying some online class or eBook or another. If you’re also the type of person who loves learning, bundles (which combine lots of resources at a discounted price) might be a good way to save money on the classes you’d buy anyway.

The Ultimate DIY Bundle is a compendium of DIY eBooks and eCourses covering topics like general crafting, holiday crafting, sewing, photography, scrapbooking, art journaling, and home decor. This week’s bundle (which is only available for 48 hours) has 69 resources for $34.95. When you do the math, all it takes is about 5 classes/books that you’re interested in to make the whole thing worth it. Plus, you’ll have a stash of other books on your virtual bookshelf when you’re itching to learn something new.

This bundle was offered once before (in January), and I totally missed out on it. Ugh. I looked at it, tried to see if there were classes in there I wanted, and then I forgot about it. Until the deadline passed and I was out of luck. This time, it’s back for an even shorter amount of time! Geez. The Ultimate DIY Bundle will only be on sale for 2 days – from 9am EST on Monday, March 31 until 9am EST on Wednesday, April 1.

So for me personally, what material am I most interested in learning?

Those are just the books and stuff that appealed the most to me (and the original prices definitely add up to more than the cost of the bundle). There’s tons more books too! So you should check out the full index of included resources here.

Disclosure: I have included affiliate links in this post. Read the fine print about this bundle and read the answers to frequently asked questions about the bundle.

Hello (my re-introduction to blogging)

Welcome to Random Olive | randomolive.com

Once upon a time, back when I was in junior high and high school, I used to make websites. This was back in the early days of dial-up modems, geocities, and the original tripod websites. I even used Blogger when it first came out (before it was owned by Google).

I left the blog/web world sometime in 2004. I was in college at the time, in a professional program, with what I thought were better things to do outside of my computer room. I was (and still am) very concerned with privacy and anonymity and keeping my web life separate from my work life. So, I stayed out of the Google-able atmosphere.

Now I’ve decided to jump back into the blogging world, after a ten-year hiatus. Even though I was once an early-adopter, now I feel like I’m a bandwagoner. In the last ten years, we’ve seen blogging explode as a potential full-fledged career, rather than just a side hobby. We’ve got every genre under the sun: cooking and recipes, makeup and beauty, crafting, home decor, finance, arts and media, lifestyle, even blogs about how to blog.

I don’t know yet what this blog will be. I think it will be a mix of the random things that interest me (duh). I don’t have a five-year plan. I don’t have a predestined niche. I’m just going to write and share. And hopefully, someone, somewhere, will get something out of it.

Who’s Olive?

Hi, I'm Olivia, aka Olive. I've been an avid reader of blogs for years and decided that it was finally time to start producing instead of just merely consuming.

I'm one of those people who always insisted that I was boring. Nothing exciting or glamorous. But you know what? I realized that I don't have to be glamorous to share the bright and colorful spots in my every day life.
